About ebook formats


There are many ebook formats but please note: all eBooks sold on SkoobeStore.com are currently in the epub format, pdf Format. It is important to be aware thet the .lrf format is specific to Sony Reader only.

.ePUB

The .epub or OEBPS format is an open standard for eBooks created by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). Epub is looking to become the standard generic format.It combines three IDPF open standards:

  • Open Publication Structure (OPS) 2.0, which describes the content markup (either XHTML or Daisy DTBook)
  • Open Packaging Format (OPF) 2.0, which describes the structure of an .epub in XML
  • OEBPS Container Format (OCF) 1.0, which bundles files together (as a renamed ZIP file)

Use with:
epub files are supported on the following e-book readers: iRex iLiad, iRex DR1000, Sony Reader, Bookeen Cybook and indirectly also Amazon Kindle.

PDF (Portable Document Format)

A file format created by Adobe Systems, initially to provide a standard form for storing and editing printed publishable documents. The format derives from PostScript by removing language features like loops and adding support for things like compression and passwords. Because PDF documents can easily be viewed and printed by users on a variety of computer platforms, they are very common on the World Wide Web. The specification of the format is freely available from Adobe.

PDF files are supported on the following e-book readers: iRex iLiad, iRex DR1000, Sony Reader, Bookeen Cybook and indirectly also Amazon Kindle.

.LRF (Sony Format)

The Sony reader uses an iTunes Store-like interface to manage a users library, download between PC and reader in much the same way as itunes and to purchase books from Sony Connect eBook store. It also can display Adobe PDFs, ePub format, personal documents, blogs, RSS newsfeeds, JPEGs, and Sony's proprietary BBeB ("BroadBand eBook") format. The Reader can play unencrypted MP3 and AAC audio files.

.mobi, .prc (mobipocket Format)

The Mobipocket file format is a binary format for the distribution of eBooks. It is one implementation of the Open eBook Publication format with a number of proprietary extensions. The Open eBook Publication format is developed and specified by the IDPF (International Digital Publishing Forum) an independent organization formerly known as the Open eBook Consortium. As a consequence, the Mobipocket format is based on HTML and is reflowable. Mobipocket supports most features of standard HTML to format and layout text and images.
Mobipocket eBooks are designed to be read on a variety of devices and not just desktop PCs. The file format was design to solve a number of problems that arise when you try to display content on devices that have very differing capabilities. Mobipocket files are cross-platform. You do not need a different file for the different platforms, the same binary file will work on PC, Pocket PC, Palm, Symbian smartphones, Blackberry, etc...
